Helpful Information About Pimples On The Scalp

Pimples on the scalp are a very common occurrence that targets both sexes and people of all ages and all walks of life.  Some individuals only are bothered by a few minor pimples from time to time while others will experience extremely bothersome outbreaks that cover a good majority of their scalp.  Typically what happens in these occurrences is the hair follicles simply become inflamed which result in the appearance of tiny pimples on the scalp.

For some people, they are incredibly frustrating since they can itch and be hard to reach and see since they are covered with hair.  They resemble small pustules that you may suddenly notice from a sharp twinge of pain that will appear when you are brushing or combing your hair and the bristles or teeth run over and puncture them.

Causes

It is unclear what exactly causes pimples on the scalp to appear.  In some cases, dermatologists believe that micro-organisms including mites, yeast and bacteria can really thrive in the environment of your scalp and they are the causes.  It is helpful to avoid oily hair products that can aggravate acne breakouts.

Treatment Options

If you have suddenly experienced an outbreak of pimples on the scalp and you have recently switched to a new styling product, you may want to discontinue the products that you are using to see if the problem just eliminates itself.  Quite often they can even be caused from heavy conditioners as well so it is helpful to just eliminate conditioner altogether and only use a gentle shampoo.

You can also treat pimples on the scalp the same way that you would annoying outbreaks on your face or body.  However, it is very important to know that any acne products that contain an ingredient called benzoyl peroxide may bleach the roots of your hair but this is the most effective product that you can use.

Other medications such as those that contain salicylic acid can also be easily applied to your scalp by using either your fingers or a cotton ball.  These products work well with some people while others see no improvement at all.

It has also been reported that in certain cases, pimples on the scalp can be treated by simply using a dandruff shampoo.  These types of shampoos usually contain zinc so they are known to be beneficial to treat body acne as well.

Prevention

To prevent pimples on the scalp, you must engage in proper scalp hygiene at all times, not just when the breakout occurs.  You may also want to consider switching from your current shampoo to one that is hypoallergenic.  These are usually specifically designed for oily skin and oily hair and they will help to eliminate the chance of excessive oil build up that could cause a future outbreak.  It is recommended that you apply an acne topical treatment to vulnerable areas of your scalp after you shampoo.  Additionally, if you have apple cider vinegar handy at home you may want to mix some with water and offer your hair a rinse with it.  Apple cider vinegar will strip away any excessive hair product build up.

Scalp Folliculitis

Pimples on the scalp can often be confused with scalp Folliculitis.  This is a disorder that occurs in the hair follicles that can be characterized by itchy, widespread breakouts, usually right along the hair line.  Scalp Folliculitis is believed to be a result of yeasts and bacteria.

If you have tried treatment options for acne and nothing is working then there is a good chance that you have scalp Folliculitis  If you suspect this is the case then you should see your doctor or dermatologist as soon as possible so that you can be started on treatment therapy.  Such treatments may include antibiotics, steroidal agents and antihistamines.
